Poster's note
The definitive academic treatment of the stay-behind networks across Western Europe. Ganser spent years in NATO and national archives before the book's publication, and it remains the most comprehensive single-volume account available in English. Essential reading for anyone working in this strand — it provides the comparative framework (Belgium, Switzerland, Greece, Portugal) that contextualises what was happening specifically in Italy, and the bibliographic apparatus alone is a research tool.

Abstract
Publisher abstract
After the end of World War II, the United States and Great Britain set up a network of stay-behind armies across Western Europe to operate in the event of a Soviet invasion. These clandestine networks were found to have been involved in a series of terrorist incidents, the most serious of which was the 1980 Bologna train station bombing in which 85 people died. This book investigates all known stay-behind networks in Western Europe, documenting their existence and their link to terrorism.
